Baseball Vacation Part 2

Thursday August 14th, Day #5:
It was Matt's Birthday, so we slept in and took our time getting up!!! We grabbed some breakfast, relaxed some more and headed to the harbor.  After walking around for a little bit, we went to the Hard Rock Cafe.  Matt ordered a burger with crab meat on it and I also ordered it.  It was a staple to order in Baltimore and very delicious!

After lunch, we headed over to the National Aquarium to see all the ocean animals.  We saw fish, sharks, turtles, more fish, eels, tropical birds,  and my favorite part dolphins!!!  We spent most of our day at the aquarium so after seeing all the animals, we hoped on the free bus route.  After riding on the bus for a little bit and getting a self "tour" of Baltimore, we got off and went to Brick Oven Pizza for dinner.  It was on Diners, Drive, In's and Dives.  Very delicious and probably my favorite place we ate on the trip!  Then after dinner, we got back on the bus and headed back to the hotel to relax for the rest of the night.

Friday August 15th, Day #6:
Check out of the hotel in Baltimore and took a taxi to the bus terminal.  We took an hour bus ride to our third and final stop, Washington D.C. We arrived at Union Station in D.C, took the metro to a stop in Arlington, Virginia and the bus from our hotel picked us up at one of their stops. The bus took us to the hotel, we checked in, dropped our luggage off and freshened up.  We hadn't ate since breakfast that morning at it was somewhere around 2 pm.  The hotel had a bus route that could take us anywhere around the hotel.  We went to a Mexican restaurant for a late lunch.  I ordered chicken fajita's and they were delicious!!! There was a lot of food too but I was starving so I ate most of it.

After our late lunch, we took the metro to the Nationals ballpark stop and headed to the game.  Matt and his dad Butch have been to the ballpark before but Sandy and I had never been.  We walked around and bought some t-shirts. It was also a give away and fireworks night.  The gave away a Nationals hat, which was really nice but it had a bottle opener on the rim of the hat. Just FYI, I haven't worn it since.  The game was great and the weather was awesome.  The Nationals ended up winning beating the Pittsburgh Pirates. We took a taxi home instead of the metro because it was packed.  The taxi was also a lot easier for Butch and Sandy.  We arrived at the hotel and went night night.

Saturday August 16th, Day #7:
Let me just start out with this, our hotel was awesome!!! The hotel room had two separate rooms: a living room and the bedroom.  Of course it had a bathroom too which was very nice.  We stayed at the Hilton in Arlington. The breakfast was amazing!!! Out of all the hotels, this was by far the best breakfast.  It had eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, grits, fruit, cereal, pancakes, juices, oatmeal, an omelet station, a waffle station and a soda fountain! It was delicious and they had all the little touches. The staff and hotel were very helpful and nice with everything.  According to my brother in law, all Hilton hotels are like this.  So if you ever have the opportunity to stay in a Hilton, I totally recommend it. We will if we do!
After breakfast, we headed to the Washington National Monument or as Alissa likes to call it the "pencil". We had tickets to get in at 10:30 am.  Once we arrived we went up to the tippy top.  You could see Washington D.C. on all four sides of the monument.  The views were awesome and they had pictures in the monument from the 50's to see what has changed over the years.  That to me was very cool.
Once we were done with the monument, we headed back to the metro and went to the Zoo.  We have been to Washington several times for Matt's medical appointments so we didn't need to see anything. On our way to the zoo, we stopped at Fat Pete's BBQ.  It was okay: the beans were a little spicy for me, the meat was dry unless you slathered BBQ sauce on it, I liked the sweet BBQ sauce and the green beans tasted funny.  Something to do with the butter or something.  I also ordered a small side salad but they brought me out a full salad, so I was pretty full when they brought my meal out. Definitely not the best BBQ we have had but it was good to try different things.
We continued to walk to the zoo and walked around for a while.  Well Matt, Sandy and I walked around, and we got Butch a little scooter. We did a lot of walking that week and he deserved to sit for a little bit. We split up: Matt and I went one way and Sandy and Butch went another.  The two things I knew I wanted to see were the elephants and the panda bears. Made my goal and saw both of them.  The elephants were eating and the panda bears were SO CUTE! I just wanted to take one home and cuddle up with him.  They looked so soft and cuddly.
Once we were done with the zoo, we took the metro back to the hotel. We got back to the hotel around happy hour.  They had pretzels with a yummy dip, vegetables, popcorn, the soda fountain and other drinks.  Did I mention how awesome this hotel was! The little things go a long way at hotels. Once we were done with happy hour, we headed to the rooms for some relaxation. Butch took a nap and we watched some television.  We didn't want to go far for dinner, so we tried a restaurant right around the corner from the hotel. It was closed so we just ate at the hotel.  Sandy and I shared a club sandwich which was very good and Matt and his dad shared a burger and fries.  We all shared some chocolate cake as a late piece of cake for Matt's birthday and then relaxed for the rest of the night.  We knew we had a long day of travel on Sunday, so we wanted to do as much relaxing as possible Saturday afternoon/night.

I love collecting smashed pennies from vacations.  Here was my collection from this trip!

Sunday August 17th, Day #8:
Day of travel! Our flight didn't take off till 3:10 pm so we took our time with breakfast and getting around that morning. The hotel had a shuttle you could take to the airport.  We took that, checked into our flight and had a little time to kill before our flight left.  We all ate some lunch and then got on our flight. The flight took a little over two hours to get back to Kansas City.  The hotel we stayed at the first night in Kansas City had a shuttle we had to take back to pick up Butch and Sandy's car.  We drove to Mike and Stephanie's house for a BBQ and then headed back to Columbia.
Overall it was an awesome vacation! Our next baseball tour will probably be Cleveland, Detroit and Cincinnati! Oh yeah and Go Royals!!!
