A couple of weeks ago, Matt and I took a trip to Washington, D.C. for a little vacation/medical trip for Matt. He was due for his bi-annual check up and we wanted to spend some time together before baby #2 comes. The first day of vacation was a run errands, pack, drop Andrew off with grandpa and grandma Harris and fly to DC. After leaving the airport in Garden City, then a connecting flight in Dallas, we made it to DC around 11:30 pm. We still has to take the metro to Bethesda, check into NIH, check into the lodge and then finally arrived to our room a little after 1 am. It was a long day.
The next morning we had to be up at 515 am to be at Matt's first appointment at 6 am! He then had three more appointments. By the third one, I could barely keep my eyes open on 4 hours of sleep. Matt told me to go back to the lodge and take a nap. So I did! It was very nice of him. After I woke up, he was back and done for the day. We took the metro downtown to Bethesda and went to Potbelly Sandwich to try a sandwich and their chips. They are a big thing on the East coast. Very good!
Potbelly Sandwich. The hot peppers were very hot and the chips were very good.
Matt's choice of chips. He said they were very hot.
Had a doughnut from the grocery store since it was national doughnut day.
One of the many escalators from the metro to the surface. This is one of the longest ones in Bethesda.
After that we walked around and went to the grocery store for a couple of things then headed back to the lodge. We watched the Nationals vs. Cubs game, ate Chinese for dinner and called it a night.
Saturday morning we took our time getting around and then headed over to the ball park for the Nationals baseball game. IT WAS A HOT DAY! Our seats we totally in the sun since it was a 12:05. So we ate some lunch first. I tried Ben's Chili Bowl, also very good! We sat in our seats for a couple innings, then walked around. We found a table to sit at under some shade and sat there for a couple of innings to cool off.
Spending some time with my hubby!
View from our seats. The Nationals lost but it was still nice to go.
After the game we went to Bethesda to walk around and we went to the Tasty Diner for dinner. Every time we come to D.C. we go to this diner. Too bad it's going down hill. The food was okay and the service was horrible. We headed back to the lodge for the night and relaxed.
I was so excited about Sunday! I planned the whole day for things we haven't done. We have been the DC a lot together and I wanted to do something different! Matt wasn't too excited about the day but I am glad he tried it with me. We went on a Cupcake and Macaroon Tour of Georgetown!!! The tour didn't start till 1 pm, so we headed to Georgetown for lunch. We had to take the Metro to a stop and then take the bus to Georgetown. There is no Metro stop directly in Georgetown. After we got there, we had some time to kill before the restaurant opened for lunch. We walked around and went to a real deal antique store. Like stuff you don't want to touch antique. Not the normal antique stores we go into. After that we went to eat lunch at Pier 2934. I got a shrimp poy boy and it was delicious!!! Matt got a chicken poy boy. He's not a big seafood kind of guy.
After lunch we walked around some more and headed over to the Old Stone House. This was our meeting place for the tour and the house is the oldest house in Georgetown.
The pretty backyard
For a house from the 1700's, it was pretty big and a two story.
Then it was time to start the tour!
First stop was Sprinkles Cupcakes
We got samples at each stop. This was a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting.
Very good!
Second stop was Thomas Sweet
Sweet Chocolate Carmel Sea Salt Fudge
Third stop Macaroon Bee
Never had a macaroon before. Very good!
Carmal chocolate macaroon
If you have never had one before the texture is between a cookie and a cake.
Fourth Stop Olivia Macaroon
A beautiful macroon cake
Pistachio Macaroon
Fifth stop was Dean and Deluca.
Very fancy grocery store!
These were all cookies!
More cookies
Neapolitan Macaroon
My favorite out of all the macaroons.
Expensive cheeses.
Olives
This stack of chocolates from different countries was $50.00!
Cheesecake Brownies!
Fancy chocolates
Our sixth and final stop was Georgetown Cupcakes!
They had their very own show on Food Network. I was excited to try their cupcake but was a little disappointed. Didn't like it as much. Preferred the Sprinkles cupcake.
Red velvet cupcake with buttercream frosting.
Since we were on the tour, we didn't have to wait in line!
After the tour, I was on a major sugar rush. We headed back to the hotel and rested for the night since we did so much walking on the tour. Monday morning Matt had one more test then we took the bus to the local mall. We ate at Bobbys Burger Palace (yes the one owned by Bobby Flay!)
We shared a black and white shake. Very good!
I got a grilled chicken sandwich LA style with guacamole, cheddar cheese and some greens on it. Matt got the sunny side up burger with back and an egg on it. Then we shared some sweet potato fries! Very delicious lunch!
These were so good!
My grilled chicken burger.
We walked around the mall for an hour or so and then took the bus back to the hotel. There was a free shuttle on campus that took people to the grocery store. We didn't want to go out to eat so we took the shuttle to get some groceries for dinner and breakfast the next day. I made goulash for dinner along with some brownies and shared them with the other guests at the hotel.
Tuesday was a long day. We met with the doctors that morning and found out that everything is going well with Matt. They are keeping their eye on some lymph nodes but they have either decreased or stayed the same since 2011. So we were good to go! Very thankful for NIH, the doctors, the lodge and tests they are able to perform on Matt. After we got the okay, we said bye to some people that we met at the lodge and headed to the hotel. We took the free shuttle from NIH and arrived at the airport. We had 4 hours to kill so we walked around, ate lunch, played some Sudoku and before you knew it, it was time to board the plane. We took a three hour flight from Washington DC to Dallas. Once we arrived in Dallas we had 30 mins to get off the plane, run/walk to terminal B (we were in terminal C when we arrived) and make our next flight. We had 10 mins to spare before they starting boarding. That flight was an hour and we made it back to Garden City around 1130 pm. Overall I thought we had a very nice and relaxing vacation. It was so nice to spend some time with my husband, just the two of us before we become a family of four!
